Coventry council elects Hillary Lima president, names John Paul Verducci vice president and reappoints town solicitor

Council member Hillary Lima was elected Town Council president at a ceremonial meeting in Coventry that followed swearing-in festivities for newly elected officials. The council, called to order at 6:51 p.m. by Town Clerk Joanne Amatrano, approved Lima’s appointment by a 6-1 roll-call vote.
Joanne Amatrano, the town clerk who ran the meeting, took a roll-call vote to appoint Lima. The recorded votes were: Frank Brown Jr. (yes), John Paul A. Verducci (yes), Jonathan Pasquale (yes), Alisa (Alyssa) Capaldi (yes), James (Jamie) LeBlanc (yes), Hillary Lima (yes) and Scott Copley (no). The clerk announced six affirmative votes and one negative; the motion carried and the meeting was turned over to Council President Hillary Lima.
Before the vote, a council member asked for clarification about the president’s powers. The solicitor explained the role in municipal practice: "the powers are to, run the meetings, to organize the agenda and serve as a ceremonial head of the town," and added that additional responsibilities depend on council rules as adopted by the council.
Following the president’s election, the council appointed John Paul A. Verducci to the office of vice president. Nominations were closed with no other candidates and a roll-call vote recorded seven affirmative votes; Verducci was confirmed unanimously.
The council also considered the appointment of the town solicitor. Council member Alisa Capaldi nominated Stephen J. Angel to continue as town solicitor; the nomination was seconded and a roll-call vote recorded seven affirmative votes and no negatives. The motion passed and Angel was reappointed.
The council opened a public comment period but recorded no speakers. With no further business, a motion to adjourn was made and seconded; the meeting was adjourned at 7:04 p.m.
The session combined ceremonial swearing-in of school committee members with the council’s organizational business, including leadership elections and the solicitor appointment.
