Library seeks about $200,000 to reconstruct aging parking lot and widen entrance

Library director Britney presented a reconstruction plan for the library parking lot, which is original to the building and roughly 24–25 years old. She said three bids ranged from about $190,000 to $220,000 and she used a median figure of about $200,000 plus a 10% contingency to cover areas needing additional support.
“The purpose of this project is threefold,” Britney told the committee: maintain the overall surface, extend the concrete slab at dumpster areas to handle heavy loads, and slightly widen the Janesville Road entrance to reduce conflicts when vehicles enter and exit. She noted core samples performed by DPW showed a 2-inch mill would be sufficient in most areas, saving cost compared with deeper reconstruction.
Staff suggested packaging the work with the city roads program to obtain better pricing; the county gave verbal permission for the slight entrance widening but formal paperwork would be required. Britney also said light poles previously earmarked for sandblasting and powder coating will likely need full replacement and she will return funds for that work to the city when the need changes.
There was no formal vote to appropriate funds at this meeting; the library request remains a capital item for council consideration as staff finalize bids and potential packaging with the roads program.
