A landfill committee meeting in Muskego City on Oct. 7 opened with the compliance officer’s quarterly memo, which flagged odor complaints and site-access concerns.
Eileen Madden, the committee member who provided the compliance memo, said "odor complaints over the last 4 months have been predominantly Metro. Out of the 9, I've had to deal with 2," and told the committee she had assigned responsibility for those two incidents to contractor GFL. Madden said Metro appeared to have a cover problem and that the issue will be discussed at Metro’s meeting.
Madden said she was concerned about easy access at the entrance on 8 Mile Road after recent construction and recommended additional physical deterrents. "I'd love to see a gate," she said; she also mentioned a fence and noted a berm already blocks an older access point. Committee members and staff discussed putting a cable or similar deterrent in place as an interim measure.
Staff did not report recent incidents of people taking unauthorized access at that entrance but agreed to add deterrents to reduce the risk and visibility concerns. The committee did not adopt a formal motion to require specific hardware at the meeting; discussion concluded with staff direction to explore deterrent options and report back.
The committee also noted related contractor and site-management topics would be discussed at a Metro meeting attended by some committee members.
