Longtime resident presses Erlanger council on speeding; city commits to traffic study

A longtime Erlanger resident urged the City Council on Oct. 1 to act on growing speeding concerns on his residential street, and city staff pledged immediate data‑collection and follow‑up.
Charles McClanahan, who told the council he has lived on Harvard Avenue since 1964, said drivers are increasingly fast on the residential block and that heavy trucks and newer vehicles make the road more hazardous for children and older residents. "It's getting so big now... it's gonna get dangerous as time goes by," McClanahan said during public comment.
In response, city staff (Speaker 13) said the city has already deployed traffic counters in nearby locations and will move counters to McClanahan’s street to capture direction, speed and time‑of‑day data. "What we can commit to ... is going out and doing a traffic study," staff said, explaining the city will analyze the data within a few weeks, meet with residents for an on‑site public workshop, and then recommend corrective actions ranging from targeted enforcement to engineering changes.
Councilors clarified that staff will treat the street holistically and may collect data at multiple locations along the corridor to establish a baseline. Staff estimated the initial data collection and review could be completed in less than a month, with further prioritization to follow based on the results.
What’s next: Staff will notify affected residents about the workshop and follow up with the data results and proposed measures. No ordinance or new expenditure was adopted at the meeting.
