The Chippewa Valley Schools Board of Education on Aug. 12 approved a package of business items including the district’s July change-order summary for the 2018 bond program, a $33,745.47 purchase of ovens and a milk cooler for elementary kitchens, a newly written 3–5 year strategic plan and a bundle of new and revised board policies addressing tobacco use, public events and advertising.
The motion to approve the 2018 bond change-order summary was presented by Mr. Zelen, who said the changes reflected owner-requested work, code compliance and hidden conditions and were all “within the contingency budget allocation.” He told the board the report had been reviewed by the Building and Site Subcommittee and that funding will come from the 02/2018 building and site fund and the safety grant.
Superintendent Ronald Roberts summarized the strategic plan, which he said retains the board’s 2015 vision and includes goals on curriculum and instruction, climate and culture, technology and strategic facility planning. Roberts said staff collected more than 3,800 community survey responses during plan development. “This plan represents a thorough review of the previous plan coupled with engaging staff and community,” Roberts said.
The board also adopted a set of new and revised policies (policy numbers announced by staff as 1615, 3215, 4215, 5512, 7434, 9160, 9700 and 9700.01) intended to update definitions and coverage for traditional tobacco products as well as e-cigarettes and vaping devices. A board member explained the 9,700 series changes were intended to clarify that advertising with tobacco, firearms or sexually explicit content is not acceptable on school property.
The ovens and milk cooler—three pieces of equipment total—were procured through the HBS cooperative program and will be paid for from the food-service fund as part of a mandatory fund-balance spend-down.
Board members said the change-order report, the strategic plan and the policy package had been vetted in subcommittee; the motions carried by vocal assent. Staff said the detailed change-order listings and the new policy texts are available online for community review.
Next steps: the adopted policies will be posted with other board policies and the strategic plan will guide implementation priorities during the 2024–25 school year.
