Springfield High School named National Blue Ribbon; board, community celebrate

Springfield High School was formally recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School during the Springfield School District Board of School Directors— Nov. 20 meeting. Principal Dr. Hepp said the designation became official after a Washington, D.C., ceremony on Nov. 8 and presented the board with the school—s plaque and banner.
Dr. Hepp told the board the school earned a building-level state score of 92.4, which ties it for eighth place among traditional public high schools in the state and tied for 11th among all high schools. He described the Blue Ribbon nomination and selection process as initiated at the state level, followed by a detailed federal application and screening process. "This is not something you apply for," he said, explaining state representatives nominate schools and successful nominees complete an application that is screened nationally.
Board members responded with congratulations and said they plan to display banners and signage around the district and on building windows. Several members noted the district had permission from the township to place pole banners, and members thanked teachers and support staff across the district. Resident speakers during public comment echoed the praise: Susan Knoll recounted numerous personal memories of district teachers from elementary through high school and said those relationships endure for graduates.
The recognition and accompanying publicity prompted brief discussion about upcoming celebrations and athletics schedules; Dr. Hepp said the district will share details when plans are finalized. The board did not take policy or budget action related to the Blue Ribbon award during the meeting.
