Parent urges Springfield board to fix cramped Scenic Hills third-grade classroom

Gormley said she discussed the room with the teacher (identified as Mr. Scalley in her remarks) and the principal and was told there were no plans for substantial improvement. She said the teacher had an alternative room but chose the current space "due to its better shape," and that parents had been told the stove would be removed and the wall behind it painted — leaving "a big empty space" rather than meaningful renovation.
She asked the board for "simple yet impactful changes" such as removing large empty storage cabinets, painting cinder-block walls to compensate for limited natural light and otherwise making the space more welcoming and functional for third graders. Gormley said several other parents share her concerns and asked the board to consider the request.
President Lord thanked Gormley for speaking; the board did not make a policy decision or vote at the meeting on these requests. Board members and school staff did not provide a detailed timeline or budget for any improvements during the meeting. The transcript shows staff discussed a stove removal and a paint job but did not describe planned removal of storage cabinets or a capital project request.
