Glynn County committee accepts $3.7 million DOJ grant for regional first-responder radio upgrade

Glynn County's Finance Committee voted to accept a $3.7 million Department of Justice grant to fund a regional upgrade of first-responder radio communications and amended the FY25 grant fund budget to reduce revenue and expenditures by $1,220,000.
Lisa Johnson, the county's public safety grants manager, told commissioners the award is a congressionally directed spending allocation. "That award letter was issued on 08/15/2024," Johnson said, adding that the county submitted a full application in June and that the grant contract was cleared by legal on Aug. 19, 2024. "We have 45 days to respond and accept that award," she said.
The project covers radios for the Glynn County Police Department, the Office of the Sheriff, Glynn County Emergency Management Agency, GB 911 and the Brunswick Police Department. Johnson said the county originally requested about $7.4 million and was recommended for $3.7 million.
Johnson also described a related, still-pending Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) application for $1,000,000 that includes a $200,000 local match for fire and rescue equipment. "As of last Friday, we have not been awarded that," she said. Johnson said if the AFG is not awarded the county will ask the Department of Justice whether fire and rescue can be included in the DOJ grant allocation.
The committee voted by voice/hand-raise to accept the DOJ award and to amend the FY25 grant fund budget by reducing revenues and expenditures by $1,220,000. Commissioners earlier approved the meeting agenda and the consent agenda by voice vote. The meeting adjourned following the grant action.
