Glynn County amends ordinance to allow citizens to serve on multiple boards, shorten resume deadline

The Glynn County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved an amendment to county ordinance section 2-2-7.1 on Dec. 19 that removes the prohibition on citizens serving on more than one county board, shortens the resume submission deadline from nine calendar days to seven, and changes a requirement from "must" to "should," allowing the commission greater flexibility when considering applicants.
County Attorney Aaron explained the prior prohibition dated from about 2010–2013 and was intended to prevent consolidation of influence, but the change responds to recruitment challenges and boards that meet infrequently. Commissioners acknowledged both risks and benefits: some said the rule helped broaden civic engagement by forcing recruitment of more volunteers, while others said the rule limited the county’s ability to use scarce volunteers on multiple small boards.
The ordinance change passed unanimously. Commissioners suggested follow-up work to review which boards the amendment should apply to and noted that appointees remain subject to at‑will removal by the commission.
Next steps: staff will prepare any administrative follow-up and commissioners may review applicability to specific boards in a future work session.
