Tempe Union board celebrates districtwide A ratings; approves baseball trip and contract renewals

The Tempe Union High School District governing board celebrated that every school in the district received an A letter grade under the state’s accountability model and took routine business actions at its regular meeting.
Dr. Alexik, who presented the district’s accountability data, told the board “all our schools have been labeled as A schools, and our district is also labeled as an A district,” and outlined how the state’s formula assigns weight to multiple measures: 30% proficiency, 20% student growth, 20% college- and career-ready indicators, 20% graduation-rate measures (lagged cohorts), and 10% English-language assessment performance. Alexik credited targeted instructional work, expanded proctoring and a revised EL schedule for some of the gains, and cited WestEd training and classroom “cadre” collaboration as key supports.
The presentation included detail on EL (English learner) supports. Charlotte Windsor, who oversees the district’s Title III federal programs, was singled out for coordinating changes including splitting the EL assessment across days to reduce fatigue, meeting individually with parents of withdrawn students to provide test practice, and shifting to a one-hour EL model with in-class support. Alexik said those changes, along with veteran-teacher coaching and WestEd partnerships at Marcos and Tempe High, contributed to increased EL proficiency and growth.
The board also recognized student and staff achievements. Leika Srivastava, a Desert Vista High School senior honored for winning the Division I singles badminton title at the AIA state championships, told the board she hoped for more recognition of badminton as a sport and noted, “Badminton isn't recognized as a college sport in the U.S.,” adding a lighthearted fact about shuttlecock speeds during her remarks. Superintendent Dr. Wilson and the board honored Cameron Kale (Mountain Pointe High School) and Tina Wilson (McClintock High School) for statewide art-education awards.
On routine business the board approved a letter of agreement allowing Corona del Sol High School to participate in the USA Baseball National High School Invitational (item H1) and approved contract renewals for fiscal year 2024–25 (item H2). Both motions passed unanimously. Earlier in the meeting the board had approved the consent agenda and adopted the meeting agenda by unanimous votes.
