Board approves student trips, consent agenda and records public request to name facility for Coach Rick Smith

At its Oct. 8 meeting, the Flagstaff Unified School District board approved several routine items, including two student trips and the consent agenda, and recorded a public request to consider naming a facility for longtime coach Rick Smith.
Public comment: Mike Cromer, a Flagstaff Public Schools alumnus and former teacher, asked the board to consider honoring Coach Rick Smith with the naming of an athletic facility at Flagstaff High School in recognition of Smith's record (Cromer cited four state championships during Smith's tenure). The board thanked Cromer, expressed concern for his family circumstances, and staff agreed to follow up about placing a more fully developed naming proposal on a future agenda.
Trips and consent items: Nathan Dolance, a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Sonoma Middle School, requested approval to take students to Washington, DC and Philadelphia March 16–20, 2025 through the Close-Up program. He said the per-student cost is $2,160, scholarships are available (one scholarship per 10 students signed up), and Close-Up provides adult supervision and medical partnerships. The board moved and unanimously approved the trip.
Representatives of Flagstaff High School's FCCLA chapter (senior Jasmine, Isabella Garcia and sponsor Diane Sorden) requested permission for an educational trip to Disneyland that includes a visit to California State Long Beach; about 30–35 students are expected to attend. The board approved the FCCLA request unanimously.
The board also approved the consent agenda by voice vote.
The meeting record shows the board will coordinate with Mr. Cromer on placing a naming item on a future agenda if he wishes to present more documentation.
