The superintendent reported to the Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board that 24.3 percent of district students are currently identified as chronically absent (missing 10% or more of enrolled days) and that average daily attendance across the district is 93.3 percent.
"We're really working. We've created dashboards for each of the schools so they can monitor their attendance rate, chronic absenteeism rate, but also identify individual students who are either chronically absent or at risk," the superintendent said, describing school‑level outreach and individualized family engagement strategies. The superintendent added that the most frequent day of absences observed in the month was Monday and that the three most common reasons were illness, unverified absence (parent did not call), and family vacation.
Trustees asked whether the district tracks absences by grade band and whether school activities contribute to absences; staff said more granular analysis is possible and that some excused absences for activities are counted differently at secondary schools. Staff also said special education teams are conducting targeted outreach to the most affected students.
The superintendent said the district will continue refining interventions and reporting and offered to provide further breakdowns by school.
