The Smith County commission’s court voted Jan. 21 to adopt a resolution expressing support for the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce Veterans Committee’s effort to have the state designate a stretch of U.S. Highway 69 as the Veterans Memorial Highway.
Jackie Clay, chair of the veterans committee, asked the court to endorse the proposal to honor local veterans and their families. The requested stretch runs from South Loop 323 in Tyler to the city limits of Bullard. Clay said the designation would be a “meaningful tribute to the courage, the sacrifice, and the unwavering dedication of the men and women who have served,” and thanked local veteran-serving organizations involved in the initiative.
Judge Franklin read the resolution into the record and emphasized the court’s role: the county may express support but cannot itself effect state highway designations. The court approved the resolution by voice vote after a motion by Commissioner Carraway and a second by Commissioner Harritt; the clerk recorded that the motion carried.
What’s next: The resolution will accompany the committee’s work as it seeks legislative action at the state level. The court provided a copy of the adopted resolution to the committee and posed for a photo following the vote.
