Resident appeals assessed value for Belle Chasse home; council upholds assessor

Wilson Hildebrand appeared before the Plaquemines Parish Council on Sept. 26 to appeal the assessed value of his 980-square-foot home, which he said was assessed at $120,000. He told the council he believes comparable nearby sales support a lower assessed value and said he provided email documentation of four comparables.
Assessor Sarah Taylor summarized the property's recent appeal history, noting the parcel has been before the Board of Review and the Louisiana Tax Commission multiple times and that the assessor's office considered nearby sales, interior condition and post-hurricane damage when determining a $120,000 value. Taylor said one comparable cited by the homeowner involved an intra-family sale and that the assessor's records extend back decades in some cases.
Council members questioned the comparables, square-foot discrepancies and prior litigation. Councilmember LaFrance moved to uphold the assessor's valuation and Councilmember Newsom seconded; the motion was recorded in the minutes and the council upheld the assessment consistent with the assessor's recommendation.
What this means: The property owner may still pursue administrative appeal rights at the state level (Louisiana Tax Commission) or pursue other remedies available under state law.
