Council awards fire-training-center bid, tables Lone Oak mowing decision and extends Maple Grove mowing contract

At its Dec. 9 meeting the Nicholasville City Commission approved the award of a previously budgeted fire department training-center project, agreed to study whether Lone Oak property mowing should be done in-house or contracted, and extended the Maple Grove Cemetery mowing contract for one year.
Staff said the fire-training-center project was budgeted in the current fiscal year but bids exceeded initial estimates; the city received one responsive bid after a second solicitation and staff recommended awarding the bid and returning with a budget amendment. The commission moved, seconded and approved the award.
On Lone Oak weekly maintenance (mowing) Commissioner Brown moved to table the item and directed staff to conduct a scope-and-cost study comparing contracting to purchasing equipment and performing the work in-house; staff estimated heavy-duty equipment purchases at roughly $50,000–$60,000 and noted the site is roughly 30 acres with additional trimming scope beyond simple mowing. The commission agreed to table the item pending the study.
Separately, the commission approved a one-year extension of the Maple Grove Cemetery mowing contract, as staff recommended.
