Parlier council hears $6 million ‘next‑gen’ fiber pitch from Unwired; contract to return Aug. 15

Unwired Broadband presented a proposed $6,000,000 “next‑gen” fiber network to the Parlier City Council on Aug. 1, saying the company aims to begin construction in September and finish in March 2025. The company representative told the council the project would bring one fiber strand to each residence and two fibers to schools and anchor institutions, with a residential price point of $99 per month and a business price of $299 per month. At launch the company said it would offer up to 5 gigabits per second symmetrical service with potential to scale toward 10 Gbps if demand materializes.
Mayor Alma Beltran confirmed the company will return to the Aug. 15 meeting with the proposed agreements. City staff (identified in the meeting as Jeff and Javier) will prepare the contract and supporting materials for council review and public disclosure. The Unwired representative said the central office lease and master encroachment agreement had been reviewed by city staff and legal counsel and that the company expects to negotiate access agreements with apartment complexes and other multifamily properties.
The presentation framed the project as a public‑private partnership intended to extend high‑speed connectivity to residences, schools, businesses and other anchor institutions. Company representatives estimated coverage of nearly 4,000 locations in the city and described outreach to apartment owners to reach complexes that want to be connected.
Next steps: the council confirmed the item will return on Aug. 15 with finalized contract documents so the public can review the proposed terms and, if ready, the council may consider formal approval then.
