Needles officials recap recent fire response, park work and community events; staff highlight housing resources and new cannabis lab

City staff used the July 10 Planning Commission meeting to brief commissioners and the public on several community updates, including fire response, park work, special events planning, housing resources and a local cannabis testing lab.
Staff recapped a recent multi-acre fire that began on the 900 block of Bush Street and thanked partner agencies including San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services, the Red Cross, Caltrans and the sheriff's office for their response. Staff said the Needles Connect app was used to push evacuation and sheltering information to residents and urged residents to download the app for future alerts.
Commissioners and staff described cleanup and vegetation removal at Bob Bell Beach Park (referred to in the meeting as Bob Felt/Bob Bell Beach Park), a new playground and cabana area, and plans for event parking. Staff clarified rental rules for cabanas and noted that activities within 100 feet of the high-water mark are limited by state requirements read into the record.
On community events, staff and commissioners discussed reviving the farmers market and craft fairs, plans for a fall community market and a Veterans Day breakfast, and use of licensed food trucks with county health department oversight. A commissioner emphasized vendor lists and coordination with county health permitting while staff said prior events had attracted vendors from across the region.
Staff announced that the Chamber of Commerce hosted a grand opening for US Cannabis Labs, noting the lab is one of a limited number in the state and plays a role in product safety testing for local cannabis businesses. Economic notes included the council-adopted vision, mission and goals and the city's focus on tourism and hospitality as economic drivers.
On housing, staff said the housing authority has 52 units and roughly seven currently available; staff also reminded residents about Section 8 vouchers and application procedures for eligible applicants. Staff said further studies and reports will be forwarded to council to inform policy decisions.
The meeting also included appreciation for animal-shelter spay/neuter efforts and a request to continue interagency evacuation planning for nearby housing developments; staff said the city would coordinate road closures and staging areas with the sheriff and fire department in future evacuations.
