Needles — During the Sept. 10 meeting, a WestCare housing and domestic-violence advocate described local support services and urged the council to coordinate outreach to improve survivor access.
The advocate (identified in the transcript as Stephanie) said WestCare provides a 24/7 on-call advocate who responds with first responders and described services including a safe-house shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, short-term housing and assistance with benefits and employment. She said grant opportunities are available and that WestCare is willing to apply for funding to increase local services. In the presentation she stated that local domestic-violence reports have risen roughly "37% since January," said the office accepts Medicaid and noted a low-fee ($25) DUIs-related screening service.
Council members thanked the presenters and asked staff to connect WestCare with local first responders and service providers. The meeting transcript records community appreciation and encouragement for partnering with county and regional resources.
What happens next: Staff asked to follow up on referrals and resource guides; WestCare said it will support local outreach and grant applications.
