Butte County renews temporary closure of Humboldt Road to vehicles after robust public support

Butte County supervisors voted Feb. 25 to renew the temporary closure of county portions of Humboldt Road to vehicular traffic, accepting staff's recommendation to keep the route closed for recreation and public safety while retaining the option to revisit permanence later.
Joshua Pack, director of public works, said the board originally adopted the temporary closure in 2020 and has extended it several times. Pack recommended another 18‑month extension rather than a permanent closure, citing technical and maintenance issues, funding sources tied to maintained mileage, and the county's ability to use road funds for repairs while the route remains in the maintained system.
Public comment included organized recreation stakeholders and local residents who urged retention of the closure. Priya Tuval of ChicoVelo, a local bicycling nonprofit, said the community benefits from keeping the road closed and shared data showing consistent recreational use. Multiple residents and clubs noted reduced crime, lower trash levels, and recreational use by youth athletes.
After public comment the board adopted the resolution to continue the temporary closure and authorized the chair to sign; staff said this action can be renewed several more times (up to five additional renewals) before the board must consider a permanent change.
