Orange County board imposes temporary countywide burn ban amid dry conditions

The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted to impose a temporary countywide ban on open burning after staff warned of rapidly drying conditions and increased fire risk.
The county administrator told the board that Division of Forestry officials are expressing concern and that staff monitors the U.S. Drought Monitor for guidance. Several supervisors said they had observed recent fires near their properties and supported a ban to protect life, property and firefighting resources. One supervisor moved that the board adopt a burn ban using the same language and procedures used the previous year; another supervisor seconded the motion.
Board members clarified the ban's scope during debate: standard recreational grilling and permitted uses such as contained barrel burns are not being outlawed, and the county is not proposing to ban consumer fireworks. Staff said the county's approach will emphasize education and communication (press releases, social media, message boards and contact with local fire departments) rather than immediate penalties, and staff will rescind the ban when conditions improve.
The motion carried by voice vote. County staff will issue public communications and coordinate with fire departments to inform residents.
