Residents ask Danvers Select Board to fund rapid-flash beacon at Burley Ave and Maple Street

Bill Bates, a town meeting member, told the Select Board on Dec. 17 that neighbors at the Burley Ave and Maple Street intersection (Route 62) need a rapid rectangular flashing beacon (RRFB) to protect schoolchildren and other pedestrians. He said the Transportation Advisory Committee heard a presentation Dec. 11 and supported exploring beacons but lacks a budget to implement them. Bates estimated the cost of a beacon at approximately $8,000–$10,000 and said he and neighbors will advocate for funds at future Finance Committee hearings and at Town Meeting.
A parent of Great Oak School students who attended the Transportation Commission meeting described the crosswalk as “incredibly dangerous” for families who walk to school and urged the board to slow traffic and prioritize pedestrian safety. Select Board members responded that they rely on the Transportation Advisory Committee to recommend specific locations and that the town manager, finance director and relevant departments will examine funding options prior to the budget process.
