Daly City libraries announce youth programs, app soft launch and backpack drive results

At the Sept. 17 meeting of the Daly City Library Board of Trustees, staff relayed several items from the executive director’s report covering youth programming, volunteer opportunities, community outreach and a soft launch of the system’s new library app.
Staff reported that applications for the 2025–26 Daly City Youth Poet Laureate will open in early October and asked trustees and community members to help promote the opportunity. DCPLA (Daly City Public Library Association) also requested volunteers for two upcoming events: a beer garden shift at Kasayahan (Oct. 5) and a table at the Top of the Hill Community Fair (Oct. 19). Trustees discussed forming a small subcommittee (limited to two trustees to comply with open-meeting rules) to work with DCPLA on a needs-assessment or liaison outreach.
Trustees noted community events and fundraising: Trustee Goodman (named in materials) will participate in the Project Read trivia fundraiser in November; staff reminded the board of the Art & Lit Fest on Nov. 2. On behalf of an absent trustee, staff reported the annual backpack drive distributed 228 backpacks to three local schools (Bayshore Elementary, JFK, Woodrow Wilson).
Staff announced Daly City was chosen for the ZipBooks grant for the year but said the award amount was not yet specified. The board discussed continuing the ZipBooks program and other youth services.
The board also heard about the new library app: staff said the app has been soft-launched and is currently discoverable in the App Store under "PLS" (the label will be updated so users can find a Daly City–branded version after logging in with a Daly City library card). Features described include searching the catalog, account renewal, placing holds, saving barcodes for mobile checkout and links to e-audio/e-books and event calendars. Staff plans to demo the app at a future meeting after App Store labeling issues are resolved.
Trustees exchanged observations from outreach: one trustee recounted a recent visit to Half Moon Bay Library and praised its architecture and high usage; members discussed the value of visiting peer libraries as part of outreach and potential programming inspiration. Trustees also discussed workshop ideas — including a potential living-trust workshop — and noted existing legal clinics and countywide partnerships that could supply presenters.
Staff said it will circulate Michael Herrick’s Menlo Park Library Commission inquiry about liaison coordination to trustees and follow up with additional details; trustees agreed to revisit the liaison matter at the next meeting when more members are present.
The board adjourned after confirming future agenda items including an app demo, Menlo Park liaison follow-up and outreach planning.
