Councilmembers described local recreation programming — bocce, senior volunteer opportunities, after-school programs and food pantry services — and thanked staff for steady community work.
In the Disability Pride Month proclamation, the mayor read a statement submitted by Lehiya Andrade Suniga. Andrade Suniga, identified on the record as president of the board of directors for the Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities and chair of the State Independent Living Council, provided remarks honoring disability culture and the need to combat ableism.
Councilmembers connected the proclamation to local planning: several noted the city’s work on inclusive playground design and a planned “Magical Bridge” project intended to serve people of all abilities, and discussed setting aside affordable housing units for residents with disabilities in upcoming projects.
Council members praised the role recreation and other city programs play in social connection and accessibility, linking the proclamations to both daily services and long-term projects that staff said would be brought forward to implement inclusive design and housing considerations.
