Trustees discuss library needs assessment, opioid policy and community outreach

During the May 21 meeting, Daly City trustees considered whether to conduct a library needs assessment and discussed scope and method. Jayla Anderson said the library has not recently completed a formal needs assessment and cautioned that poorly framed questions or low response rates can limit usefulness; trustees suggested both in-house and consultant-led approaches and a trustee (speaker 4) proposed asking the community to submit ideas for a DCPLA-funded "wish" as a public engagement exercise.
On opioid prevention, Anderson said she is drafting a policy and has referred it to the city's risk management office to ensure it aligns with municipal requirements. She noted she is reviewing exemplary policies from other libraries and anticipated required staff trainings.
In announcements, Anderson said the library system has secured a new public copier vendor (color-capable machines will roll out across locations) and a new contactless credit-card processor for book-sale purchases and copy payments. She listed upcoming events: a Leipo workshop for Asian Pacific Islander Month at the Bayshore Library on Thursday, May 30 at 6 p.m., and a StoryWalk kickoff Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Bayshore Heights Park.
Trustees asked for updates on state budget cuts and for more information about libraries' coordinated advocacy efforts at a future meeting. The board adjourned after completing agenda items.
