Board approves special-use permit to expand canopy at Al's Country Corner

The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to approve SUP 2024-247 (Al's Country Corner), permitting an expanded fuel canopy and reconfiguration of fuel dispensers at 5515 Spottswood Trail in Barbersville.
Kira Davis, planner for Orange County, presented the application on behalf of Interstate Sign Company and Diamond Jubilee Investments LLC and said the parcel (Tax Map 54-120) is roughly 2.32 acres in the Barbersville Overlay District. Davis told the board the applicant seeks to expand the canopy so more pumps are under cover, move one dispenser beside the building for kerosene sales, and remove two out-island dispensers. "This will greatly enhance safety in the area," Davis said while showing a VDOT roundabout sketch for U.S. 33 and Route 20; she added VDOT has not expressed concerns with the canopy expansion or the expected traffic.
Applicant representative David Slick described the layout changes and confirmed the net number of dispensers would remain the same, with three under the expanded canopy and one beside the building.
After a public hearing with no speakers signed up, Supervisor (chair) moved approval with the planning commission’s recommended conditions; Supervisor (second) supported the motion. The roll-call vote was recorded as 5-0 in favor.
Outcome: SUP 2024-247 approved 5-0; resolution number referenced in staff materials was 24-17. The board closed the public hearing and approved the permit with the planning commission conditions.
