Garden City — The Garden City Commission on Sept. 3 authorized staff to apply for Kansas Department of Transportation Fall 2024 cost-share funds to replace traffic-control equipment at several intersections across the city.
Public works staff (Tyler) said Garden City maintains 38 traffic-controlled intersections and that staff, with engineering partners, identified controllers, conflict monitors and battery backups in need of replacement. The estimated total cost is $1,098,986; staff proposed requesting $554,986 from KDOT with a local match (KDOT allows up to $1 million in awards and typically requires local cash match of up to 15 percent, staff said). The 2025 budget includes $80,000 for the city's portion of potential cost-share awards.
Staff said the application deadline is Sept. 19, 2024, and that award notifications would arrive in November. Commissioners supported applying for the grant, noting it would accelerate replacement of aging equipment.
What’s next: Staff will submit the application by the Sept. 19 deadline and notify the commission if a grant is awarded; if not awarded, the city will apply budgeted funds to replace equipment incrementally.
