Garden City authorizes RFP for temporary police facility during law enforcement center renovations

Garden City — The Garden City Commission on Sept. 3 authorized staff to release a request for proposals seeking temporary facilities to house Garden City Police Department operations while the existing law enforcement center is refurbished.
Police staff and the chief told the commission that the LEC has suffered multiyear water and sewer leaks, recurring restroom failures, unreliable HVAC and persistent odors from sewage that have disrupted daily operations. Staff said the RFP will seek at least 12,000 square feet of space with parking for a minimum of 30 vehicles, 24/7 access control, and the ability to support dispatch and emergency communications; the goal is a move-in on or before Sept. 12, 2025.
Commissioners asked about review-panel composition for RFP responses and possible earlier move-in dates if a suitable building becomes available. Staff said a working group will evaluate proposals and that the city will coordinate with Finney County to manage dispatch and jail-service interdependencies.
The commission approved release of the RFP and asked staff to present fiscal notes and further details about infrastructure and timing when potential sites are identified.
What’s next: Staff will advertise the RFP, assemble an evaluation team and return to the commission with recommended options and cost estimates when proposals are received.
