Commission approves tent and parking waivers for Jack’s Tap Kitchen, limits noise hours

Garden City — The Garden City Commission on Sept. 3 approved a request from Jack’s Tap Kitchen to waive temporary-structure and parking requirements for planned outdoor concerts this fall and separately limited an approved noise-waiver to 1 a.m. on approved dates.

City staff presented the request from Jacob Gonzales, identified in the agenda as manager at Jack’s Tap Kitchen, to put a tent in the restaurant’s parking lot at 1907 E. Mary St. on selected dates tied to community events. Gonzales described the July event as "for the most part, well," but said new booking challenges and late-arriving patrons led him to request flexibility on start times and experimental later hours to attract younger audiences.

Commissioners voiced concerns about late-night noise and potential staffing needs for public safety. One commissioner said the possibility of events running into early Sunday morning could require additional police staffing and urged caution. After debate, the commission approved the temporary-structure and parking waivers and then returned to consider the noise ordinance waiver. A motion to allow noise until 1:00 a.m. on the selected dates passed with the record showing a 4–0–1 vote.

Commissioners asked the applicant and staff to report back after the events to inform any future requests and emphasized the need to coordinate with neighboring properties and permitting processes.

What’s next: The applicant may proceed under the approved waivers on the specified dates; staff will monitor compliance and report results to the commission.
