Clear Lake proclaims May 18–24 National Safe Boating Week; Auxiliary highlights life-jacket program

The Clear Lake City Council on Thursday designated May 18–24, 2024 as National Safe Boating Week and heard from members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary about a longstanding life-jacket distribution and education program.
The mayor read a proclamation citing U.S. Coast Guard statistics on recreational boating fatalities and urging residents to wear life jackets and practice safe boating. Auxiliary volunteers described a program that fits and gives away life jackets to children 12 and under at community events and noted a June event at Lucerne/Bait Shop where life jackets will be distributed and fitted.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary representative said the program emphasizes education for parents as well as children and noted donations from local organizations have supported the initiative for more than a decade.
Council welcomed the volunteers and encouraged residents to take advantage of life-jacket fitting and safety education offered by the Auxiliary.
