The Clear Lake City Council unanimously approved an updated memorandum of understanding with the Kanaka Unified School District to continue a full‑time school resource officer (SRO) for the coming school year. Police Chief explained the MOU continues the SRO position that resumed in the 2023 school year, and that Conoco Unified School District will pay $160,992 to cover salary, benefits, overtime, training and vehicle costs — roughly $14,300 more than last year.
Chief said the department can provide one full‑time SRO under current staffing and that the MOU contains provisions for additional officers for special events at full cost to the district. Council members asked about the SRO’s time allocation across high, middle and elementary schools; Chief said the majority of time historically was at the high school and a few other larger sites.
Council Member Kramer moved to approve the MOU; Vice Mayor Overton seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
