Clearlake City Council voted unanimously on Nov. 7 to adopt an ordinance requiring tobacco retailers to obtain a city license and to subject noncompliant sellers to fines, suspension and possible revocation of the right to sell tobacco products.
County public‑health staff told the council the ordinance mirrors the recently adopted county law and is intended to reduce youth access to flavored and other tobacco products. Liberty Francis of the county tobacco education and prevention program said the county and its partners won a Department of Justice grant of about $383,000 to fund three years of local decoy operations and law‑enforcement overtime to test retail compliance.
