Board hears road-maintenance update, Monroe Creek Bridge work to start Oct. 2; supervisors press for intersection safety measures

Roads and maintenance staff briefed the Westmoreland County Board on routine maintenance, planned projects and safety concerns, including a recent fatal crash on Route 205.
"We've cleaned ditches on Leadstown Road... We've patched potholes throughout the county," the public-works presenter said, and reported that surface-treatment work will continue through the end of the month. The presenter said a revenue-sharing acquisition of drainage easements is delaying some projects.
On larger projects, staff said one of two bridge projects in a scour-bundle has been awarded to a contractor, and that Monroe Creek Bridge has a notice-to-proceed date of Oct. 2 with an estimated nine-month construction duration. The presenter warned that Route 205 will be reduced to one lane with a temporary signal during construction.
The presenter and supervisors also discussed a recent fatality at Hall Store on Route 205. "Every fatality gets reviewed," staff said, noting the district traffic engineer will examine the crash and that maintenance items identified in that review will be implemented. Supervisors urged near-term remedies — rumble strips, better signage, selective enforcement and, if warranted, applications for intersection redesigns, including turn lanes or a roundabout.
Board members asked staff to follow up with VDOT and local law enforcement on enforcement and to return with options for intersection improvements, crash reviews and any quick-maintenance fixes that can be scheduled before winter.
