The sheriff told the board that chemicals used to clean the shelter have damaged concrete and exposed joints, allowing waste to absorb into porous floors and making sanitation difficult. "We need to fix the floor and the drains, epoxy paint that concrete floor, and then install proper kenneling in those two rooms," the sheriff said, describing the work as immediate maintenance to restore sanitary conditions and kennel capacity.
Cost estimates presented to the board listed $23,007.80 to correct floors and drainage and $12,008.14 to replace kennels. Board members clarified whether the figures were separate bids or part of a single contract and discussed bundling larger kennel-area work into a capital improvement plan. The county attorney noted potential legal liability if the facilities remain in a degraded condition.
After discussion, a supervisor moved and the board voted to approve the repairs. The sheriff said the work was pressing because several kennels are out of service and the shelter is currently full.
The repairs were approved; staff indicated they would obtain contractor schedules and move forward as soon as practicable.
