Police Chief told the board on Aug. 22 that a proposed school‑zone speed‑camera program is based on data from speed monitoring devices that identified recurring speeding on streets such as Pearl Street and Mount Street, and that cameras produce consistent enforcement and reduce accidents.
"It gives us that level of data so that we can see exactly how fast and how often people speed on those roadways," the Chief said, adding enforcement is automated and "it doesn't cost the town anything because it's paid for and supported based off of the...violations." The Chief framed cameras as improving public safety in problem corridors and supplying placement data.
A resident who spoke at the hearing described local speeding and urged enforcement. Commissioner Auggie Pearson said the program "isn't a money making affair for us" and emphasized that fines would be redirected into public safety programs rather than the town's general budget. Mayor Marion said the ordinance will be considered by the board at the next meeting; no vote was taken at the hearing.
