Town to replace aging clamp after Rising Sun water main break; temporary work planned Sunday

Town officials told the board June 5 they will expose and replace an aging clamp at the intersection of South Walnut and East Cherry after a recent water main break, scheduling crews to begin work Sunday at about noon.
Town Administrator Calvin A. Boddenberger Jr. said the clamp and bolts appear to be failing—likely because they predate modern specifications from earlier Streetscape work—and that staff will swap the fitting for a more modern, heavier‑duty clamp to reduce the risk of future breaks. He said the work should not interrupt water service and expects crews to finish the clamp replacement in a few hours that evening, though traffic flow may be constricted.
Boddenberger told the board that if the town repaves Main Street without fixing the underlying clamp, state paving rules will require a larger paving patch to center line standards that could cost roughly $30,000. “So before we do that, in good conscience…we're gonna switch that clamp out to a more modern, beefier clamp,” he said. The town will do the work during a lower‑traffic period and asked motorists to be patient.
A resident at the meeting also noted new water spots on a building ceiling; staff acknowledged the report and said they would investigate.
