RSU 09 board approves consent agenda, adopts two policy updates and welcomes new student representative

The RSU 09 school board unanimously approved the consent agenda and accepted minor policy adjustments to BBA (board powers and responsibilities) and ILD (student submission to surveys and educational research) on a single reading.

‘‘I move that we approve the consent agenda,’’ said Speaker 6, who made the motion to adopt the consent items. Speaker 1 solicited a second; the motion was seconded and, after no substantive discussion, Speaker 1 called the vote and announced the consent agenda passed unanimously.

Earlier in the meeting, Speaker 1 introduced Julian, a junior joining the board as a student representative. Speaker 1 described Julian’s extracurricular activities and his interest in learning how the district makes decisions: ‘‘He wants to be on the board to learn about decisions that are being made and educate himself more on how the school works.’’

During the superintendent’s report, Speaker 2 outlined a planned professional-development workshop day during the school year intended to provide differentiated training for drivers, custodial staff, EdTechs, professional educators and administrative assistants. Speaker 5 asked about replacing an open special-education support position; Speaker 4 said the district has advertised the role and prefers an out-of-district hire to avoid program disruption and will have updates in the coming weeks.

On policy items, Speaker 7 moved to approve BBA and ILD by block under item 12; Speaker 5 seconded the block approval. The board conducted the block vote without further amendment and approved the policies on the first reading.

The meeting concluded with the chair adjourning without objection.

Next steps: administrators will continue recruitment for the special-education support position and the approved policy language will be incorporated into district policy documents.
