Harpers Ferry council backs letters over National Park Service staff reductions, requests fixes to draft wording

Councilmember Christian, who drafted versions of proposed correspondence, asked the council to sign and send three letters requesting support and highlighting impacts from staff reductions.
Christian said the letters were similar in substance but addressed to different offices; he asked that the council sign and send the letters to the offices named in the drafts. Council members raised one specific editing problem: in one draft the addressee’s title was incorrect (the draft used a House‑representative phrasing where the drafters intended a Senate designation for one recipient), and members agreed to correct those errors before sending.
Councilmember George and others spoke in support of the letters as nonpartisan appeals for the welfare of the park and its staff. A motion to finalize and send the corrected letters, with signatures from the mayor and all council members, passed by voice vote (motion carried 5–0). Council members encouraged residents to call their senators’ offices in addition to the written correspondence.
The council directed staff to email and mail the corrected letters and to obtain signatures from council leadership.
