Smithfield proclaims Constitution Week; candidate speaks and manager lists fall events

Mayor Andy Moore read a proclamation declaring September 17–23, 2024, as Constitution Week in the Town of Smithfield, citing the 1787 Constitutional Convention and federal public law that designates Constitution Week. The proclamation was presented during the council's presentations; no representatives from the DAR were present at the reading.
The council briefly reopened the public comment portion to allow Jeff Sullivan to speak. Sullivan introduced himself as a candidate for the Board of Education (District 7), described his background in teaching and community ties, and asked for the council's consideration.
During council members' comments, members highlighted community events. One councilor described the town's fourth annual drone flying day and a drone race planned for October, noting that the town has a designated free flying area for drones without remote ID. Town Manager Mike reviewed upcoming parks-and-rec events including a movie in the park on Sept. 6, the fall concert series starting Sept. 13, and a Kids Fish Day on Oct. 5. He also asked the clerk to place budget amendments he had approved into the meeting minutes for the official record.
The council moved on to other agenda items and later convened a closed session at the end of the meeting.
