Appearance Commission summarizes tree projects, downtown planters and a new Bartlett tree inventory

Caitlin Tarley, chair of the Appearance Commission, presented the commission’s annual report to the council, summarizing expenditures, volunteer projects and upcoming plans.
Tarley said the commission’s general fund expenditures were ‘a little over $14,000’ for projects such as new benches and shade structures at the community college, wayfinding sign plant replacements downtown, planter maintenance and replacement plants at Sunset Cemetery. The commission funded a new Bartlett tree inventory to update an assessment last performed in the early 1980s and said the inventory will guide replacement and treatment recommendations.
Tarley described outreach activities — a spring cleanup at Smith’s Collins Park in partnership with DOT and other groups, tabling at last year’s Ham and Yam event to raise awareness, and a T‑shirt fundraiser that helped build a Donate a Tree program balance of roughly $1,200. She said the commission will continue downtown collaborations with the Downtown Smithfield Development Corp., local businesses, the garden club and the historical society and will consider projects beyond the downtown area once the core vision is sustainable.
Council thanked the commission for the report and its leadership.
