Votes at a glance: Newport council approves licenses, contracts and event permits
Summary
At its June meeting the council approved the consent calendar and a slate of licenses and contracts including liquor-license transfers, special events, a ferry dock agreement, a gateway parking assessment, Murphy Field turf work, water-chemicals bids and multiple entertainment-license actions. Several items were approved with conditions or referred to administration.
The Newport City Council completed a broad set of routine and contested votes at its June meeting. Highlights included:
- Consent calendar: Council approved the consent calendar (with a few pulled items) by voice vote.
- Business and liquor licenses: The council approved a change-of-ownership license for Bossy Monkey Corporation d/b/a Mountain Moose (472 Thames Street) and several other licensure matters including transfers for Cabana (140 Broadway) and multiple entertainment and liquor-license expansions and renewals; the council also approved Vieste Vinho Hut's (580 Thames Street) request to add a 502-square-foot outdoor service area.
- Special events and road closures: Council approved a block party on Willow Street (June 22, rain date June 23) and referred road-closure details for the Newport Independence Day celebration to administration.
- Harbor and transportation agreements: Council approved a five-year agreement allowing Interstate Navigation Company to operate and overnight-dock at Paraty Park Marine Terminal (June 2024 ' Dec. 2028) and approved awarding a condition assessment contract for the Gateway parking structure to Parr Corporation for $14,200.
- Public works and utilities: The council awarded multiple material-bid contracts for road materials and hauling of street sweepings, and approved a not-to-exceed $73,135 contract to Rad Sports for Murphy Field athletic turf improvements. It also received and approved annual chemical bid awards for the water treatment plants estimated at approximately $1,719,675 for the year (usage-dependent).
- Planning and zoning: Council received a large package of proposed zoning ordinance amendments (ADUs, impervious surface changes) and scheduled a public hearing for July 10; the council also received a CRMC communication about a proposed dock at 96 Washington Street and noted Waterfront Commission review and objection deadlines.
Most items were voted by voice and recorded as carried; where public objections were raised (notably in licensing and outdoor-dining items) the council either incorporated existing restrictions into approvals or referred specific implementation details to administration.
