Bone Lake supervisor brings 139-signature petition urging rumble strips at risky intersection

Nancy Badoon, a supervisor from the town of Bone Lake, told Polk County supervisors she has gathered 139 signatures asking for rumble strips on County Highway I at its junction with Highway 48 after multiple serious accidents at that intersection.

"I've got 139 signatures from people in Polk County that agree that rumble strips should be placed on I on both sides of 48," Badoon said during the public comment period, describing long, hill-lined stretches where drivers may not see stop signs until they are upon them.

Badoon said she did not know whether the county or the state ultimately makes the decision, and offered to take the petition to Madison if the county cannot act. Board members did not debate the issue during public comment, but they asked Badoon to leave contact information so the highway commissioner or staff could follow up.

Later in the meeting supervisors and staff suggested the matter would be appropriate for the county's quarterly public safety committee to discuss and that involving the sheriff's office would help engage the state patrol and state engineers on potential solutions. A county official said the item could also come back to a future county meeting for further discussion if needed.

The petition and the suggestion to route the request through the safety committee and sheriff's office represent next steps rather than a formal county action; supervisors did not adopt a specific roadway improvement at the meeting.
