Polk County veterans office reports surge in VA favorable decisions, highlights holiday assistance program

Andy told the committee that year‑to‑date the office had about 211 veterans with favorable Department of Veterans Affairs disability decisions, with retroactive payments totaling about $1,688,000. By comparison, Andy said the office recorded 100 favorable decisions and about $1,036,000 in retro payments for the whole of 2023. "We more than doubled essentially our favorable decisions and our workload," Andy said, attributing the surge in part to the expansion of the PACT Act and outreach to veterans who had not previously used VA benefits.
Andy also highlighted Operation Christmas Angel organized by the Patriot Guard Riders of Wisconsin and asked that veterans who may benefit be referred to the veterans service office for assistance with applications. Committee members described several local memorial projects and donor fundraising that support veterans memorials and events.
The committee did not take formal action on the veterans update; staff asked members and community partners to refer eligible veterans to the office for benefits enrollment and holiday assistance.
