Draft Polk County Farmland Preservation Plan published for review; public hearing planned

Polk County staff presented a draft update to the county’s Farmland Preservation Plan and opened the document for a one-month public review. The plan updates the county’s 2014 document and includes a land-evaluation/site-assessment tool to identify contiguous agricultural lands for preservation, chapters on population and land-use trends, transportation and environmental preservation, and recommended implementation actions.
Staff said they will solicit and incorporate town- and stakeholder-level corrections, expect Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection review, and hope to return to the committee in October for a public hearing and, depending on comments, a resolution to adopt. Staff noted that plan designation alone does not confer tax benefits; certification and farmland-preservation zoning or participation in an agricultural enterprise area are required for tax incentives.
Next step: draft posted for review; committee will hold a public hearing in October and consider adoption depending on review input and state comments.
