Polk County committee moves 2025 forest work plan into county budget

The Polk County Land & Water Resources Committee voted to forward its 2025 annual work plan into the county budget process after a staff presentation outlining timber-sales planning, reforestation and grant dependencies. The forester told the committee Polk County has roughly 17,000 acres enrolled in county forest law and is planning about 426 acres of allowable cut based on a 15-year average. "We planted just over 71,000 trees," the forester said, describing reforestation and site-prep plans for 2026.
Committee members discussed contract administration for timber sales and stand improvements and the department’s use of Department of Natural Resources technical assistance. A motion to move the work plan into the county budget process was made and seconded and carried by voice vote. Staff said the budget submission will enable grant applications that require a statutory annual work plan.
Next step: the work plan will be routed to the county board and included in the county’s budget cycle for further review and appropriation.
