Council rescinds recently enacted sewer fee and directs refunds

On Sept. 9 the Newport City Council adopted a second-reading measure to rescind a recent sewer fee and revert to the prior sewer fee schedule. The administration advised the council that, if the rescindment passed, staff would refund fees previously charged under the superseded rate.
The chair read the terms of the second reading and noted the matter had already passed a first reading. Councilor Holder publicly thanked residents and colleagues for supporting the repeal. The chair called for additional comments; hearing none, councilors voted in favor by voice vote and the sewer fee was rescinded.
The council did not include a detailed refund schedule in the public remarks that evening; administration said it would coordinate refunds consistent with municipal accounting processes.
