Council awards multiple public works contracts, approves $1.2M EDA matching share

The Newport City Council approved a series of recommended, budgeted contracts from the Department of Public Services and the Department of Utilities. Highlights included a not-to-exceed $42,168 contract for repointing a brick wall at Innovate Newport (Structural Preservation Systems); $190,100 to replace three lower roofs at the Martin Recreation Center (A & M Sheet Metal and Roofing); and a $120,785 purchase of a CMC 75L lift. The council also approved a grant-support contract with VHB, Inc. (Providence) not to exceed $62,500 to pursue federal infrastructure grant funding, and an amendment to engineering services during construction (Amendment #6) for $66,745.
The Water Division’s recommendation to amend a contract with Stall Holdings LLC (The Pond and Lake Connection) for phragmites control (mowing and herbicide) not to exceed $14,680 through 06/30/2027 was approved, funded from the Water Fund Capital account.
Council also approved providing a matching share not to exceed $1,200,000 for an Economic Development Administration (EDA) fiscal-year 2023 disaster supplemental grant to fund stormwater and climate-resilience upgrades in the North End. The utilities director briefed council on project scope and the council thanked EDA for guidance on the grant opportunity.
All motions were carried by voice vote.
