Summit County Council interviewed two applicants for a vacancy on the North Summit Fire Service District administrative control board at its May 31 meeting and adopted a retirement proclamation honoring a long‑time Basin Recreation employee.
Jay Adams introduced himself as a Colville resident who served 35 years as a Los Angeles city fire paramedic and described why he wants to serve on the North Summit board: to bring professional EMS and firefighter perspectives, encourage incremental budgeting rather than one-time tax shocks, and improve public information around service changes. "I know that people that have to put their life on the line as a volunteer don't have the backup behind them," Adams said while explaining his support for more professionalized services.
The council next heard from John Adams, a semi‑retired financial services professional and wireless technology analyst active in the Tollgate community and vice president of the Pine Meadow Ranch HOA. John said he would emphasize listening, community engagement, and multi‑year planning if appointed.
Councilmembers thanked both applicants and told them the county would inform applicants of the council’s decision later that day; the council moved to closed session for personnel after the interviews.
Separately, the council considered Proclamation 2023‑10 recognizing Paul Kane for 15 years and 48 days of service to Snyderville Basin’s field house and Basin Recreation. The proclamation, read aloud by a councilmember, praised Kane’s maintenance work, early‑morning dedication and role managing facility operations. Paul Kane and family members attended; Barbara Kane added a short anecdote about answering alarm calls at home. The council adopted the proclamation by voice vote.
Council also approved previous meeting minutes from February, March and April 2023 as presented and adjourned the May 31 session.
Next steps: Council will complete its personnel deliberations on the board vacancy and notify applicants of the outcome.
