The Thomasville City Council approved an amendment to city personnel policy to formalize sick‑leave accrual and pay procedures for fire protection employees.
Staff said the change corrects an omission after prior updates and brings the policy into alignment with actual practice. Under the amended language, exempt fire protection employees earn sick leave at a rate of 12 hours per month; sick leave will accumulate with no maximum on accumulation for retirement credit with the North Carolina Retirement System. The amendment also clarifies that for pay purposes a sick day equals a regular workday, except for nonexempt fire protection employees assigned to 24‑hour shifts who will be compensated hour for hour when using sick leave.
Council recognized Human Resources and the fire department for resolving the technical complexity of firefighter shifts, and approved the amendment by a 6‑0 vote.
