Clayton approves purchase of historic Robertson Mule Stable using land-acquisition reserve

The Clayton Town Council voted to purchase the historic BM Robertson Mule Co property (known locally as the Robertson Mule Stable or Mule Barn) using funds from the town’s land-acquisition reserve, a step town staff and the Clayton Historical Association said will protect an iconic local building.
Town staff described the property at Second Street and Lumbar and said the purchase would be fully funded through the land-acquisition reserve so it would not affect other planned projects. The manager said the town will have consultants complete building assessments and provide recommendations for adaptive reuse.
Bruce Nagel, vice president of the Clayton Historical Association, spoke in public comment to thank the Robertson family and to express the association’s support and willingness to assist with preservation and programming for the building.
Council moved to adopt resolution 2024-124 authorizing the purchase; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
Staff said next steps include contractor assessments and public engagement on potential adaptive reuse options.
