Thomasville City Council voted unanimously to approve an agreement with the North Carolina Department of Transportation for improvements to Fisher Ferry Street, city officials said.
City staff told the council the project will add sidewalks that the city will manage and maintain when construction is complete, remove a railroad bridge but preserve it in storage for potential reuse on the Plant B site or elsewhere, and leave the current Fisher Ferry Road crossing over Hamby Creek in place so it continues to carry the city’s water lines. The preserved crossing could later be converted to a pedestrian bridge if the city chooses.
Council members asked clarifying questions during the discussion about utilities and future reuse; staff said keeping the existing crossing avoids rerouting water lines and reduces immediate cost and disruption. The motion to approve the agreement passed 6‑0.
The council did not provide a construction schedule during the meeting. Staff said details on right‑of‑way acquisitions and timelines will be developed with NCDOT as the project proceeds.
